What is Cupping?

Cupping is the combination of applying massage movements and negative pressure through the use of a suction device on the skin.  At IMPACT Physical Therapy & Sports Recovery we utilize a technique called Dry Cupping by creating a small area of low pressure next to the skin using a mechanical suction pump acting through a valve to loosen and lift the connective tissue.

How does Cupping work?

The suctioning action creates a vacuum inside the cup assisting in lifting the adhesions creating decompression of the tissue rather than compression.  By pulling on the structures instead of pressing down on them, you assist in improving blood flow and metabolic exchange.

Benefits of Cupping:

  • facilitate rigid soft tissue release
  • loosens and lifts connective tissue
  • breaks up and drains stagnation
  • increases blood and lymph flow to skin and muscles
  • powerful detoxifying, pain relieving, and energy building modality

Is Cupping Safe?

Most experts agree that cupping is safe. Cupping is supposed to draw fluid into the area; the discoloration is due to broken blood vessels just beneath the skin, much like a bruise. As long as those treated don’t mind the circular discolorations (which fade over a number of days or weeks), side effects tend to be limited to the pinch experienced during skin suction.
