ACL Knee Injury in Chicago

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) knee injuries commonly occur when jumping, landing, cutting, pivoting, or quickly changing directions in sports. This can happen with or without direct contact. These injuries, if gone untreated, can affect the health of your knee and your overall quality of life.

If you have suffered a knee injury, you may benefit from physical therapy. This will help to improve your knee, full range of motion, and strength. Your physical therapist may exam your knee to determine if you have damaged specific structures or ligaments.

The ACL is an important ligament in your knee. It resist the motion of anterior tibial translation and internal tibial rotation. This is important in order to have rotational stability in the full knee extension.

If you have ever injured your knee, we recommend making an appointment with your doctor or physical therapist. They will examine the injury and recommend next steps to be taken.

Non-surgical and surgical options are the common course of treatment to repair and/or recover from an ACL injury. After deciding on a course of treatment, our team will work with your doctor to design a rehabilitation program focused on:

  • Strength
  • Stability
  • Range of motion
  • Proprioception
  • Agility
  • Pain/Edema Reduction

If a surgical course of treatment is decided upon, in many cases, physical therapy is started pre-surgery. During this time your physical therapist will work with you to control pain and swelling. You will begin to develop muscle strength, as well as restore the range of motion of your knee. This will mentally help you prepare for surgery and the rehabilitation to occur post-surgery.

ACL rehab exercises are recommended pre and post-surgery to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee. Strengthening and range of motion exercises pre-surgery will aide in your knee rehab post-surgery. For these exercises you will work with a physical therapist on knee extension and strengthening. Some of these include:

  • Long sitting calf stretch
  • Heel slides
  • Straight leg raises
