The pelvic floor is made up of muscles and tissues from the pubic bone to the tailbone. They help support the abdominal and pelvic organs, and assist in controlling bladder, bowel and sexual activity. However, millions of Americans are suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction.
Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to a wide range of problems that occur when the muscles of the pelvic floor are weak or tight, or there is damage to the sacroiliac joint, low back, coccyx or hip joint. In some cases, pelvic pain may result if tissues surrounding the pelvic organs are irritated or there is an increase or decrease in sensitivity. Although sometimes difficult to determine, these conditions may be due to undiagnosed infections, pregnancy, childbirth, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, trauma or an outcome of surgery.
The physical therapists at IMPACT Physical Therapy are experts in designing physical therapy and rehabilitation programs to treat pelvic floor disorders and pelvic pain. Therapists treat disorders of the bowel and bladder, sexual dysfunctions, pelvic pain and dysfunctions and aide with post-surgical recovery. Pelvic muscles can require the same type of rehabilitation as musculoskeletal injury. Our physical therapists are able to offer new approaches to improve the function and condition of a patient’s pelvic floor.
