How the Graston Techniques Helps Reduce Recovery Time

What is the Graston Techniques?

The Graston Techniques is an instrument-assisted, soft tissue mobilization therapy that helps break up fascial restrictions and scar tissue adhesions. Athlete David Graston Techniques invented this technique after he was unable to fully recover from a water skiing knee injury. As the leading modality in Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM), it is clinically proven to achieve faster and better outcomes for conditions including Achilles Tendonitis, Carpal Tunnel, Adhesive Capsulitis, IT Band Syndrome, Lumbar Strain and Plantar Fasciitis. This technique has had positive outcomes in 75 to 90 percent of all conditions treated.

The Graston Techniques Protocol

Prior to treatment, it is sometimes helpful to warm up with some form of cardiovascular activity, like riding a stationary bike or walking on a treadmill. Once that is completed, the medical expert will use the appropriate instruments to scan and treat the affected area. As the instruments are moved over the affected area and come in contact with the adhesions, they help break up scar tissue and fascial restrictions. In time, this process will reduce or eliminate the adhered fibers, restoring range of motion and eliminating the associated pain.

GT allows a clinician to get as deep into the tissue as necessary to invoke change, yet be sensitive to patient pain and tolerance. As the instruments are moved over the affected area and come in contact with the adhesions there may be some soreness noted, but clinicians are trained to monitor the patient’s response and make appropriate changes in pressure as necessary.

Benefits of the Graston Techniques

Because soft tissue injuries involve scar tissues and myofascial conditions, they tend to limit a person’s range of motion and functionality. The Graston Techniques technique targets fascial restrictions and scar tissue adhesions, which provides faster recovery and rehabilitation. Other benefits of this rehabilitation program include:

Jumpstarts the body’s natural inflammatory response to encourage healing

The controlled micro-trauma induced through Graston Techniques protocol causes controlled inflammation to the scar tissue which helps initiate the healing cascade. The structure of the tissue is rearranged and damaged tissue is replaced by new tissue.

Helps manage permanent chronic conditions

Many chronic scar tissue conditions are thought to be permanent. The Graston Techniques can help improve the lives of patients who are suffering from chronic soft tissue injuries.

Allows clinicians to control the level of pressure applied

Treating a soft-tissue injury can, at times, be uncomfortable.  However, the use of Graston Techniques instruments allow the clinician to better administer the level of pressure applied. While bruising is not the intent, soreness can occur during treatment. Clinicians are trained to recognize these symptoms and adjust treatment intensity to minimize their occurrence.

Conditions Treated with the Graston Techniques

The Graston Techniques is used to effectively and efficiently treat a variety of acute and chronic conditions. Some common conditions include:

·         Achilles Tendinitis and other ankle pain

·         Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other wrist pain

·         Cervicothoracic Sprain and other neck pain

·         Fibromyalgia

·         Tennis and Golf Elbow

·         Patellofemoral Disorders and other knee pain

·         Plantar Fasciitis and other foot pain

·         Rotator Cuff Tendinitis and other shoulder pain
